Anden Verdenskrig. Paris har kapituleret til Hitlers hær og er nu besat. Men modstandsbevægelsen vokser sig stadig større, blandt andet takket være frihedskæmpere som Jean (Michael Ontkean).
Da Jean tages til fange af nazisterne er hans kæreste Hélène (Jodie Foster) klar til at gøre hvad som helst for at få ham fri. Hun lader endda en tysk forretningsmand (Sam Neill) gøre tilnærmelser i håb om at kunne drage nytte af hans nazikontakter. Men modstandsmanden misforstår Hélènes planer og bliver nødt til at sætte hendes loyalitet på en prøve. De giver hende til opgave at smugle våben ind i nazisternes hovedkvarter. Våben der skal bruges til et snigmord. Men Gestapo er på sporet af hende...
